Recycling & Upcycling in Jewellery Manufacturing

Updated: Jul 15, 2021

Recycling or upcycling? They're sort of the same ideas.

Recycling means destroying something in order to create something new.

Upcycling refers to taking waste and creating something new.

And while these two terms are used somewhat interchangeably in many parts of our industrialized world, the jewellery industry is finally taking notice.

A New Way of Thinking

Recycled items were once considered lower quality or met with disapproval. These days, it's a necessity.

Our world has precious limited resources, especially when it comes to things like silver, gold, gemstones and diamonds which make up the bulk of raw materials for jewellery manufacturing.

Some designers and manufacturers started by creating bespoke pieces of jewelry using vintage or heirloom pieces. But those techniques have limited capacity when it comes to scaling.

Today, we've taken that thinking to a whole new level, manufacturing 100% of the products we design and sell from recycled products.

Protecting Our Environment While Pushing the Edge of Fashion & Design

We believe that manufacturing stunning jewelry doesn't have to deplete our natural capital with endless mining. We've also learned that recycled materials offer a great way to actively practice ethics and sustainability while stretching our legs creatively.

That's because, unlike recycled plastic where some properties of the material are lost in the process, refining gold and silver gives us endless possibilities. The act of refining literally makes the metal pure again.

It's all about what we choose to do with them after that.

And given the prices of silver and gold, it would be a total waste NOT to use that material to create stunning, fashion-forward pieces that are gender fluid and can be worn by anyone.

An Easy, Non-Economic Decision

Most businesses make decisions based on the bottom line. Find the least expensive materials and manufacture as cheaply as possible to maximize profits.

Not us, we base our business decisions based on a Triple Bottom Line. People, Planet, Profit (PPP).

The economics of recycling don't always work in your favor. But we sleep better at night.

The rest of the world still isn’t quite sold. The most recent data from the World Gold Council shows less than 30% of the world's gold demand is for recycled gold.

That means we've got a long way to go as an industry.

But we’re not stopping, and we’d like you to join us!
